The Year the Swallows Came Early by Kathryn Fitzmaurice

Crystal's Comments: When clever, resourceful Groovy Robinson learns that her beloved father isn’t all that he seems to be, she has to make a choice between forgiveness and bitterness. Surrounded by true friends and a slightly flakey but loving Mom, Groovy’s pain and confusion are eventually overwhelmed by the size of her heart, and possibly, the wisdom of a mysterious man. Through him, she discovers that pain may be necessary, but suffering is optional.

While Groovy tries to reconcile her problems, she begins sorting through papers left for her by a famous great-grandmother she has never met. This legacy soothes and assures Groovy of a future filled with promise. Fitzmaurice’s first book is an easy read for kids and one that helps young girls see themselves as masters of their own destinies (check status at GPL).
