The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

Kendra's comments:

If you thought you had a weird family, you would probably change your mind after reading Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. In this thriller, deep dark secrets are discovered about the most dysfunctional corporate family in Sweden, the Vangers. One of the eldest of the clan hires Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist, to write a biography about all his lunatic family members and also to investigate the murder of his niece over thirty years ago. Needless to say, this quirky reporter and his unlikely sidekick Lisbeth Salander (a computer hacker with a very shady past) get a little too close for comfort for some of the Vanger psychos.

This is a translated murder mystery, so it did take me the first 80 pages to get over the language/cultural barriers. It is a long book, but I polished it off in about a week, and the pacing is terrific (again, after those initial 80 pages). Please be aware, there are a few explicit scenes and the subject matter of a few of the character's hobbies is not for the faint of heart. Regardless, I am now anxious to see the movie and read the next book in the series.
