Art Spiegelman's father, Vladek, survived the Holocaust. This graphic novel presents his father's story, which he tells to his son many years after the Holocaust. In this story, the Jews are mice and the Nazis are cats.
The artwork alone is fascinating, but add in the incredibly powerful narrative and I can see why this book won the Pulitzer Prize. The book ends on a devastating note, but there is a follow-up which tells the second half of Vladek's story.Check status at GPL.
In the second volume of Maus, Art Spiegelman continues the story of how his father survived the Holocaust in another graphic novel.
It is also the story of Art's strained relationship with his aging father. This brutally honest book was engaging and eye-opening. Check status at GPL.
