Sheila's comments:
This classic novel is known as the first great western about cowboys and is credited with the birth of the Western genre as we know it today. Known simply as The Virginian, he is a solitary man who is rough yet strong with a mysterious background. He falls in love with the school teacher Molly Wood. As their romance grows, so does the action. Cattle roundups, poker games, humorous swapping of babies at a dance, and frying up frog-legs intermingle with ethnic issues to the cattle-thieves whose corruption is still growing. The Virginian's sense of justice after hanging his friend for rustling cattle causes Molly to wonder if the violence is necessary to bring law and order to the Wyoming frontier. Good versus evil happens in the first "walkdown" gun fight in Western fiction.
