Two teenagers, John Grady Cole and Lacey Rawlings, run away from home and head south to Mexico. En route, they meet another young cowboy, Jimmy Blevins, who tags along. They all run into trouble when Blevin's horse disappears and Blevin finds him in a Mexican stable. Accused of horse stealing, Blevins takes off and Cole and Rawlins find jobs taming horses for a rich hacendado. More trouble arises when Cole falls in love with the landowner's daughter. The law finally catches up with all three and one has to pay the ultimate price.
