Kendra's Comments: The Widow of the South is a historical fiction book that will challenge you to think about our nation's history from a different perspective, that of a plantation mistress. Franklin, Tennessee was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of towards the end of the Civil War. This story follows the life of Carrie McGavock whose home is requisitioned as a hospital immediately following this gruesome battle. Carrie is called upon to aid the soldiers and in the midst of helping others tries to find herself as well. Just when life is starting to settle down years after the battle, she then undertakes the monumental task of providing each soldier with a proper burial. Emotions concerning slavery, class distinction and spirituality are explored. Plot twists and engaging characters keep the story moving.
