Anna's Comments: Oliver Stone has a dream. He wants to go out west and seek his fortune as a carpenter on the frontier. Anxious to leave death behind him after serving in the Civil War, he finds work as an apprentice to a master carpenter. Ironically his first project as a carpenter is a coffin. Oliver, not only learns how to work with wood, but he learns valuable life lessons as well. When he finally makes it out west, he is unable to find work. Desperate for money to support his new wife he takes a job building the town gallows. After meeting the hangman, Fabian Rudd, Oliver switches vocations and discovers his accidental calling…he becomes a master executioner for the Old West.
This was the first western that I read and I was surprised at how much I liked this book. Estleman offered up a unique perspective of what it is like to take another life along with great detail to the science behind hanging. Oliver’s internal struggle with his career choice also made the Master Executioner and intriguing read. Check Status at GPL
