The Sons of Liberty - Created and Written by Alexander Lagos and Joseph Lagos

Emily's comments:

When considering graphic novels, you generally start to think about superheroes…you know, Superman, Spiderman, Batman…those guys who wear capes or were genetically mutated because of a random radioactive spider bite.  When you think of graphic novels, you don’t tend to think of alternate histories.  You should though!  The Sons of Liberty is this pretty cool graphic novel set in early colonial America right before the Revolutionary War.

Two young slave boys, Brody and Graham, have escaped from their oppressive, violent master and are seeking asylum with Benjamin Lay, a strange old man who lives in a cave in Philadelphia.  Before they reach Mr. Lay, the boys are attacked and tortured.  Benjamin Franklin (yes, that Benjamin Franklin) finds the boys and realizes that during their attack they have been genetically modified (I was a little fuzzy on this portion of the story, but I figure the truth about what happened to them will eventually be revealed.)  Mr. Franklin finally delivers the boys to Mr. Lay, and they become these revolutionary ninjas who fight tyranny and mean slaveholders for justice and freedom.  I know, I know…what in the world?!  But they're actually kind of cool looking, and I can’t help that they are going to be fierce in further volumes!

If you like graphic novels, alternate history, or ninjas who kick butt, consider The Sons of Liberty.  Graphic novels, by their own design, are super easy and quick reads, definitely worth giving a chance.
