Deeper Than the Dead by Tami Hoag

Susan's comments:

Tami Hoag’s books, like Lisa Gardner’s, horrify and terrify me, but I can’t put them down (or be by myself in a dark room for at least one week after reading one).  This book kicks off a new series by Ms. Hoag set in the mid-1980s in a small college down in California.  The setting alone makes for an interesting read as the police officers attempt to solve several brutal murders of local women without the benefit of today’s technology.  As the book opens, four schoolchildren and their teacher, Anne Navarre, discover the corpse of a woman buried in the woods by school.  The chapters then alternate points-of-view between the children, their teacher, their parents, the local cops, and Vince Leone, an FBI profiler.  Many plot threads are started in this novel.  Most are satisfactorily resolved, although the author leaves just enough hanging so that you’ll rush to get the sequel, Secrets to the Grave.
