Day of Tears: A Novel in Dialogue by Julius Lester

Emily's Comments: Master Pierce Butler, a southern plantation owner, was a gambling man. In order to satisfy his debts he was forced to sell his most precious commodity, his slaves. It was the largest auction of slaves in American history with nearly 450 individuals sold to eager buyers from all over the south. Through alternating voices, the story is told from a variety of perspectives: Emma, a slave separated from her family, the money-hungry slave-seller, the guilt-ridden yet unapologetic Butler, and others who were affected not only by the auction, but by a decisive time in our nation's history. Day of Tears is a fast-paced, heartbreaking story that I would absolutely recommend. The alternating voices help make the story unfold almost like a play, creating actual characters with real voices and emotions.
