Amber's Comments: Written with great wit and creativity, Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann provides a wonderful twist on the traditional mystery story.
George Glenn, a shepherd in Glennkill, Ireland, has always kept to himself. He was fond of his sheep and read to them daily. One morning, George is found dead in his meadow – with a spade through his chest. The sheep, whose logic has been shaped mostly by the romance novels and one mystery novel that George has read them, take it upon themselves to become detectives. Who would want to harm their shepherd?
The sheep start to observe the people of the village, led by Miss Maple, “the cleverest sheep in Glennkill, quite possibly the cleverest sheep in the whole world.” Miss Maple depends on the massive, always-hungry Mopple the Whale to be their “memory sheep” and the black, four-horned ram Othello’s fearlessness to help in the investigation. The rest of the flock also contribute with their own varied talents.
As the sheep continue the hunt for their shepherd’s murderer, they uncover some dark secrets about the villagers and a suspicious crime from seven years ago. The sheep also face their own fear of the butcher, Ham, and of leaving the safety of their own meadow.
This was a great read, with an ending I certainly didn’t expect! Check Status at GPL
